This morning I came across a list of TIMES 100 most influential people in health for 2024. The list is categorised into innovators, titans, pioneers, leaders and catalysts. The following people caught my attention:
1. Mulikat Okanlawon and Fidel Strub, Noma heroes
This was the first instance I hear about noma, a neglected tropical disease of children that causes decay of the face tissue leading to disfigured facial features and death. The two lead awareness efforts leading to the disease inclusion in the WHO list of neglected tropic diseases
2. Halle Berry, A voice for menopause
I have been following Halle Berry's efforts to create awareness and push for legislation in midlife-women's-health research including menopause research. Menopause is a biological phenomenon that most women will go through in their lives but it is strange how little information is available about it, worse, few treatment options. I was delighted to see her name in the list
3. Peter Attia, Wellness and longevity trendsetter
I also have been following Dr. Peter Attia, whom I came across at The Tim Ferris Show podcast and then through his podcast. He shares advice on healthier lifestyles and more importantly, longevity. From how to optimize diet and sleep but also how to navigate the world of longevity supplements.
4. Alua Arthur, Death doula
Alua guides people through the end of life moments and allow them to either plan or manage pain and fear that comes with death. Death is one of the few things that all human beings must face at some point but also one of the most feared that it may stop people from living their full lives or preparing for it. We have birth guides (doulas) but no death doulas, she fills the gap.
